Pottery is one of the oldest handicrafts practised by man after discovering and learning the fire for crucial purposes. The first earthenware pots made in Anatolia dates back to the "Neolithic" period, that is, about 7000 BC. The pots produced traditionally in Bursa consisted of cooking pots, jugs, vases and trays used mostly in preparing food. The pottery dough, which is prepared by mixing clayey black and yellow soil, is shaped in a wheel turned with a foot, the prepared pots are kept in a dry and closed place for fifteen days, after they are baked, they are glazed according to the area of use or painted with colored paints and put up for sale.
In Mustafakemalpaşa District, earthenware darbukas are made by placing the skin on body of the pottery and the darbuka (goblet drum) after shapes of pottery goblet drums are prepared. Apart from the darbuka used as a musical instrument, earthenware whistles with sibilant sound are also traditionally produced in a different form by pottery masters.
