This gate is the third main gate of the Bursa town walls. The word “Tahta’l-kal’a”, which means “Under the Fortress”, was changed by the people into “Tahtakale”. By passing through this gate, the visitor does not come directly into the town, but enters a corridor between two town walls. Due to its architectural features, it differs in style from “Sultanate” and “Kaplica” Gate, respectively.
In the course of time, “Tahtakale” Gate disappeared due to road construction. Its foundations were uncovered as a result of the archaeological excavations made at its area, and old maps and drawings showing this gate were found.
According to the investigations made, this gate was re-built according to its original plans by Bursa Metropolitan Municipality in 2012 within the scope of the Restoration of Bursa’s Historical Town Walls.
