Mausoleum of Devlet Hatun
Mausoleum of Devlet Hatun
This mausoleum is the mausoleum of Devlet Hatun, daughter of Germiyanoglu Suleiman Shah, granddaughter of Mevlana Celaleddin-i Rumi, wife of Yıldırım Bayezid, and mother of Mehmed I.
As it is built completely of marble, this mausoleum is also called “Ak Turbe”, or the “White Mausoleum”.
This structure is built with a square plan. It is recognized to be one of the last remaining examples of Seljuk mausoleum architecture.
The “Ayete’i-Kursi”, or “Throne Verse”, is written with embossed “sulus” letters on Devlet Hatun’s marble sarcophagus.
The following sentence is written in Arabic on the head end tombstone: “This mausoleum is the mausoleum of Devlet Hatun, the Sultan of the ladies, an honourable lady. She was the mother of great Sultan Mehmed Han, the son of Bayezid Han.”
On the foot end tombstone, however, the visitor reads the following: “In the month of Shewwal, year 816 anno Hegirae”. This writing reveals that Devlet Hatun died in January 1414.
It is known that she ordered a small dervish lodge in Merzifon, and a mosque in a village of Amasya.
